Wealth inequality in Aotearoa has grown significantly over recent decades, with a small number of households holding a large share of the country's wealth. While income is taxed, most wealth is not, raising important questions about fairness and how we fund the things we all rely on.

This session will explore the role wealth taxes and wealth transfer taxes could play in New Zealand's tax system, how they work in practice and the opportunities and challenges they present in creating a fairer and more sustainable future.

Sally Hett (MC)
Sally is the Knowledge and Engagement Lead at WEAll (the Wellbeing Economy Alliance) Aotearoa, which is a member of the Better Taxes Coalition. She has previously held roles in social policy research and the innovation sector including at Nicholson Consulting and Creative HQ. She is also a dance instructor with Shut Up and Dance and runs a sauna business Campfire Sauna!

Edward Miller (Commentator)
Edward Miller has worked in the labour movement for than a decade, both in Aotearoa and across the Asia Pacific region. He is currently working as a researcher at the Centre for International Corporate Tax Accountability and Research, generating impactful corporate research to support union negotiations, campaigning and policy development.

Louise Delany (Commentator)

Louise is a long-term member of Tax Justice Aotearoa and has filled various positions on the TJA Committee. Louise's background is in public health and law. She worked for many years as a public servant, mostly in the Ministry of Health on law reform projects, and also taught at the University of Otago, Wellington campus. She is now retired.
